MADE Cornwall is dedicated to all types of creative endeavour thriving along the UK’s far south-western peninsula of Penwith, which’s why I think the following place warrants a mention.
The Cornish Barn is a restaurant, bar and smokehouse set inside the boutique Artist Residence Hotel on Chapel Street, Penzance, concentrating on locally sourced produce, craft beers and wines.
I remember when the first Artist Residence Hotel opened in Brighton back in my Sussex days. It’s fashionable reputation blossoming from the ingenious idea to post an ad asking artists to decorate rooms in return for board. The manor house in Penzance was the second project that Justin and Charlie took on; they now have four locations in total and a fifth coming to an old boot factory in Bristol next year!
Now back to The Cornish Barn, I loved the whole mood from the minute I walked in through the hotel’s bright red front door; the staff were smiley and the space was thoroughly refreshing – rustic, comfy, luxurious, stylish with an eclectic range of modern art to be found on nearly every wall. Not only did I have a delicious lunch there (falafel & halloumi burger, chips & salad) but I also enjoyed every minute of the whole experience and in my opinion it’s well worth a trip into town to see for yourself.
