When I visited Newlyn Art Gallery, I decided to park along the seafront near Jubilee Pool and walk along the Penzance Promenade. When I arrived I paid my admission to a smiley volunteer on the front desk, then nipped straight upstairs to the cafe and enjoyed a quick coffee along with the breathtaking view. The minimalist design of the building’s interior providing a fresh uncluttered space, which in my opinion sets the perfect backdrop.
First on the agenda was the Robyn Denny (1930-2014) Solo Exhibition, which extends across both floors and explores in-depth the evolution of his work over three decades and its contemporary relevance. The exhibition’s running simultaneously at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange in Penzance; the two venues are one enterprise and run as an educational arts charity.
I then visited The Picture Room, where there’s a display by Cornwall-based artist Angela Cockayne, which explores our relationship with the environment, the sea and its mythologies. There are prints, framed pieces, three dimensional collages, sculptures made of found objects in a cabinet of curiosities and a film by the artist playing on a screen – selected works on show are from the Ark Embrace collection (to read more about this please click HERE).
The Picture Room showcases recognised regional names, the work is for sale (with the emphasis on affordable) and all profits go towards supporting the gallery’s education and exhibition activities. While looking around, I was introduced to Simon Jaques (Operations Officer at Newlyn), who was the face behind the project to develop this space into an extension of the shop.
Finally I must mention the 7 Day Pass, which for only £2.20 (which includes a 20p gift aid donation) allows you access to both galleries as many times as you like over the next seven days – not only is it amazing value but you’re also helping to support an invaluable local charity.
